T-shirt yarn

I wanted to look at something different to weave or knit with so I went on Pinterest and saw t-shirt yarn, I didn't really want to buy any as it was quiet expensive and I just wanted to experiment with it. I managed to find a tutorial on how to make it and decided to give it a try. I started by getting an old t-shirt and folding it in half leaving a 1 inch gap. Next I cut off the bottom hem. Then I cut 1.5 inch strips cutting from the folded edge and stoped when I got to the part with the one inch gap. I did this all the way up to the armpit. I then cut diagonally from the outer edge, then kept cutting on the diagonal until I got to the end. All that was left to do was to stretch the t-shirt.

I did two balls of t-shirt yarn, the first was a shirt that had seams, this didn't work as well because you can see the seams but it is still usable, the second was a seamless top and it worked much better, the only problem was the shirt I used has writing on it and the parts with the print didn't stretch as well.
I'll put the website link for the tutorial I used as I think it explains it much better than I have and also it has exact measurements which I didn't use as I was just experimenting and wasn't too fussed about it being so precise. I haven't made anything with it yet but as soon as I do I will write about it to say how it went.

Weaving (matchbox loom)

While weaving at college one of my tutors mentioned that she had seen someone use a matchbox as a loom, so when I got home I wanted to see if it would work. My matchbox was 5cm in length so I left half a centimetre at each side and and then cut a notch every 0.5cm and then just wrapped the yarn around the same as when I did the cardboard loom. At first I tried weaving without a needle but it was too hard as it was such a small loom so I think it was a darning needle I used and this helped a lot. It took quite a while to do this and I think it was because it was such a small piece and it was just a little but fiddly. I didn't use any thick wool on this as I thought it wouldn't work as well and I wouldn't be able to get much on it, I think I used knitting machine wool/thread for this as it was thinner than anything else I had and I also liked the colours.

Weaving

Last week I did a bit of weaving and I used a cardboard loom, I started by wrapping some yarn around the loom starting on the back and taping it on. Once I had done that I picked some wool and began weaving. I took pictures along the way and as I didn't have time to finish it in college I took it home, this gave me more time to do something different with it. While at home I tried adding buttons and used two different threads together, I also made a pompom and wove it in. I really enjoy this and find it interesting the different things you can do with it.
